Most of the hill stations in the country where first populated by the British who unaccustomed to the severe heat of India used them as summer destinations.
The capital of one of the states of India, Shimla is a beautiful hill station with a long past. Located in the base of the Himalayas this hill station has a number of beautiful buildings, in which some of them were built by the Britishers. It was once the summer capital of India and has a number of markets selling handicrafts and antiquities.

Darjeeling is a town in the state of West Bengal. It is famous for having black tea and also has the mountain of Kanchenjunga as a backdrop. Like most other hill stations in India this was also established by the Britishers as a summer resort. This city has some great Public Schools which still function in a British influenced way.
Mussoorie is a hill station situated in the Uttarakhand state. Situated at a distance of 35 kilometres from the state capital of Dehradun, this hill station is at an altitude of over 1800 metres over sea level and has a variety of beautiful shrubs and forests. Tourist attractions here are the Kempty Falls and the ropeways.
A city in Uttarakhand, Nainital lies at an altitude of about 2000 metres above sea level. It has the oldest national park of the country situated near it called the Jim Corbett Park named after the famous hunter.
Ooty is a hill station in Tamil Nadu situated among the Nilgiri hills. Due to its captivating natural beauty Ooty enjoys a lot of attention from tourists as a summer destination. Places of interest here are the Government Rose Garden and Botanical Garden both of which are rich in variety.

Gangtok is the largest twin and the capital city of the Indian state of Sikkim. It is an important tourist landmark as it has a low temperature the entire year long and is situated among the Himalayas.
Founded as early as 1568 this hill station in Uttarakhand is considered the centre of the Kumaon region. Notable attractions here are some beautiful temples like Last Devi and Nanda Devi.
